found this on Hackaday.
for some reason the author has used a $45 module to control the steppers, however another possible option is to use a PIC 16F628 with to generate the microstepping signals for each axis and a LM567 tone decoder to generate the step/direction outputs from a PC's sound card. as the pc has stereo outputs it should be possible to control 5 steppers per channel without too much hassle.

this looks really good, but i wonder how long can survive that plastic sliders on corkscrew...
