Western Winter Teslathon 2011
Hello all,

I will be in attendance today at the Western Winter Teslathon 2011. Details here: http://www.drsparksite.com/teslathon2011.htm

Hope to see some of my fellow 4hvers at the thon, and looking forward to having a great time. There will also be a live feed at http://www.teslauniverse.com/stream.html. Check there, and http://www.teslauniverse.com/ for updates. I'll be posting a full report and lots of pictures soon! I'm also creating a thread for myself and others to blog about the thon, here: Link2

Apologies for not getting a post up about this sooner, but Dr Spark asked me not to promote the event on 4hv.org.

Junk Box Update
The 4hv.org Community Junk Box is now ready! Visit http://wiki.4hv.org/index.php/4hv.org_Community_Junk_Box to see what's currently in the junk box, and learn how to participate.

As I'm sure most of you know, the 4hv.org Migratory Junk Box was lost along with most of its contents. The contents that weren't lost are apparently not going to be returned. I've been unable to even secure the return of the log book -- the person who currently has it has gone completely silent. We've made some changes to the way the junk box will be handled from here on out, to ensure a devastating loss like this cannot happen again. The junk box is now operated from a central location, saving postage and allowing the box's size to grow without restriction. It's just getting off the ground; I hope to add much more in the weeks and months ahead.

Here is a small sample of the junk available right now:

Schottky Rollerinductor Plasticcap Doorknob2 Igbtbrick

All are welcome to participate in the junk box. However, postage for those outside of North America may be high for larger items. If there is anyone who is interested in running a similar, centralized junk repository in another geographical region, please contact me. At the very least, it would be helpful to have additional repositories in the UK and EU. Our Australian members may also be able to generate enough interest to sustain a sizable junk box. If there's enough interest, I'm also looking into creating a "free stuff" board, so that members who'd like to give away items but don't want to participate in a junk box can also list what they have up for grabs. Again, please contact me if that's of interest -- the more feedback I receive, the better.

CQ 4HV!
Our very own Dave Marshall, AB3I, will be on the air on Friday, March 20th, 2009, looking to make contact with fellow hams -- 4hv.org hams in particular. The great news is that he'll be aeronautical mobile from a military aircraft, meaning he'll have a huge height advantage. He'll be over the southeastern US from approximately 0930 EDT to 1200 EDT (1330z to 1600z), operating at 14.240MHz, perhaps moving up or down a bit to minimize interference.

Edit: If 20m is completely dead, Dave will move down to 40m, 7.175Mhz, up or down for QRM.

He should have a great signal just about anywhere with active 20m propagation. Anyone who'd like to contact him is encouraged to give it a try; it will be great fun, and a rare opportunity to work an aeronautical mobile station on HF. If you can't bust through the pileup, do not despair. He will call for 4hv.org members specifically from time to time.

If you're looking for him, be patient, as he does have a job to do that may take him away from the radio here and there. Just be patient; he should be pretty hard to miss once he's on the air.

Discussion will be on this thread: Link2 . Please direct any questions there.

HvWiki Reaches 200!
That's right, HvWiki has reached the 200 article mark! Lots of interesting and valuable information has been added to the wiki, and many of the articles are truly in-depth and well-written. If you haven't stopped by lately, please have a look when you get a chance.

At this time, we'd like to encourage anyone and everyone to participate in the wiki. Even if all you do is correct a few typos, or add a few sentences here and there, every little bit helps. It's a community effort, after all. There are a lot of articles that need fleshing out, and some in need of a good overhaul. Tomorrow, February 2nd, the registrations will be opened, which means you don't have to ask to be registered. Everyone is encouraged to register. Due to problems with spam and other unwanted guests, the registrations will only be open for one week, so please avail yourself of this opportunity and sign up.

I've also started a new board, to assist in the development of the wiki. If you have any questions, comments, or anything else you'd like to say about the wiki, please stop by the board.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the wiki's first 200 articles! 1,000 can't be far off!

Featured Project
Congrats to JimG on a project well done!

JimG wrote ...

Last October I was in a local surplus electronic parts store when I ran across a 1.375" x 3.5" 250V computer grade capacitor. Having just built two DRSSTCs I figured it might be cool to build a DRSSTC centered around this small capacitor. I then decided I would challenge myself with a few constraints.

1. The secondary shouldn't be any bigger than the capacitor.
2. The whole circuit should be kept small using SMT parts.
3. It should run off of a single power supply using a wall wart.
4. The interrupter should be on-board and easily updated.
5. It had to produce streamers, not just corona.
6. I wanted it to be a full bridge if possible.

This project is the first to be featured on the front page. If you'd like your project thread to be considered for a featured project, please make sure that your thread is in agreement with the project board rules, and contact me via PM.
