How to structure a program

Ok... I once was asked to help troubleshoot this.

It was a PID controller for a diesel generator that some students were playing with. They had a PWM output of a National Instruments I/O card, hooked up to a RC servo that moved the throttle rack of a large diesel engine.

The problem was that Windows would interrupt processing, the PWM would briefly stop, the servo would go slack, and the throttle return spring would push the rack back towards idle. The result was very unsteady speed.

Rather than get involved in real-time programming considerations, I fixed it by removing the throttle return spring. Then when the servo went dead, the rack just stayed where it was.

As Bjorn says, on a microcontroller you can use the PWM units to generate a constant PWM signal, so the uC can be doing other stuff and the servo will stay live.

Interesting, that simplifies everything. I am going give it a go, and see if I really want to move the XMOS (I will eventually, want to try some multi threaded neural networks).
