Sharing internet connection

Hi,

My computer setup is the following:

One computer running Windows 2000 Pro, connected to the internet with a USB ADSL modem and sharing this connection over the wireless network
My laptop running XP Home connected to the wireless network and thus able to surf the internet (since the 2k box shares is internet connection)

Now I want to connect another computer to my laptop using wired LAN connection, and I want it to be able to surf the internet. Therefore, I tried to enable "Allow other computers to connect to the internet via this computer" on the LAN-connection of the laptop, but I get an error message saying that it can't give the laptop the IP 192.168.0.1 since there already is another computer on the network with that IP address (which is, of course, the windows 2000 box).

Is there any other possibility to connect to the internet via my laptop, which itself connects to the internet via another computer?

try changing the ip of the 2k box like 192.168.0.5
then try it again

As Maz said, its a typical IP conflict. You can force the local IP address of either machine in the LAN settings window if I'm not mistaken. Change the last digit by a few and you should be ok.

only change the IP address on the system that is not working. if you mess with the settings on one of the other two you risk knocking it (or all of them) off the network. if that does happen, then you just have to start over, so its not the end of the world.

my recommendation would be to get a 20$ router (or 40$ wireless router) to use between your cable modem and computers. doing this will remove the extra workload from the computer directly connected to the modem, as well as no longer requiring it to be on for the other computers to get to the ineternet.

I think a machine assigned as an 'Internet gateway' (ie the machine that shares teh internet connection) has to have the IP 192.168.0.1. Your problem is you are trying to create 2 gateways on the same network - so there will always be a conflict. You might be able to get around this by not using Microsofts internet connection sharing system, but instead setting up your main gateway (Win2K box) as a proxy, and configuring your browsers to access the internet through this. Not sure though, never tried it.

Easiest way - I would recommend setting up 1 machine as your main gateway, and then connecting other machines to this via whatever you can, wireless router, LAN switch etc. it's a lot easier.

what are the posts labeled on the back of the wireless device connected to the modem?

Does you modem have an ethernet jack on it?
What kind of wireless adapter are you using? It it a device with a single ethernet port on it, one with a few ports labeled 'lan', or even one labeled 'wan'? Or a usb device/internal adapter?

There is a way to make it work in xp, I just need to know what I have to work with first...

Ok, then you are trying to connect another computer from the laptop ethernet port to the ethernet port of a desktop?

If that is the case, then you need to:
to prevent confusing windows, disable your wireless adapter
plug the computer you want to connect to the laptop to the laptop.
go to the control panel, then click on 'network and internet connections'
click 'network setup wizard'
click next
click next
click 'ignore disconnected hardware'
click next
click 'no, let me choose another way to connect to the internet'
click next
click other
click 'this computer belongs to a network without an internet connection'
click next
click next
enter whatever work group name you have been using for the laptop/internet desktop
click next
click 'turn on file and printer sharing'
click next
wait...
click 'just finish the wizard'
click 'just finish the wizard'
reboot
connect to the wireless network and have the other computer attached
wait...
open the control panel and click 'internet and network connections'
click 'network connections'
select 'wireless network connection' and 'local area connection' (use the cntrl key)
right click
click on 'bridge network connections'

That should do it...

Indeed, that's right and it' quite irritating...

Easiest way - I would recommend setting up 1 machine as your main gateway, and then connecting other machines to this via whatever you can, wireless router, LAN switch etc. it's a lot easier.

I used that method, but I'd really like the other computer connected to the laptop instead of the 2k box. If everything else fails, I'll use that method because I have to, but if it can be done using another method, I prefer the latter.

I don't really understand the question... The modem is connected to a 2k desktop which has an internal wireless PCI card in it, so the modem isn't directly connected to the wireless device.

It's an internal PCI adapter.

by the way, it's impossible to share a connection both over LAN and wireless in 2000
