Hi all. Upon realising that my 3G dongle has an internal connector exactly like the sort used on wifi cards, I realised that it may be possible to add an external "WokTenna" the same as a wifi hack.
the main reason being that 3G here is flaky beyond belief and GPRS is not much better.
it also occurs to me that for no more than the cost of two reed switches (for Gnd and Ant) and a bit of gentle kludgery a magnet could enable the external antenna without affecting the internal.
the trick here is to find two very small reed switches which conveniently come in many laptops such as MacPro and some Sony Vaios using magnetic lid sensors. they aren't much bigger than a .125W resistor and respond to even a weak field :)
