Hi, i need an USB hub controller IC, but i cant seem to find any with through-hole soldering. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Programming is not really my game, so using a microcontroller is not an option. High-speed would definately be preferable, and i need seven ports, but i dont mind cascading several IC's to achieve this.

Thanks!

Most are in SMT packages, there is however one I found here! It is only a 4 port though.

TI do a 7 port version, but it is SMD only.

Some chip manufacturers will sell their smd chip on a daughterboard for prototyping, I think ftdi do this with their usb controllers.

That appears to be only a full-speed device. They are forty times slower than high-speed, but i cant find anything better. I have found some ideal devices in SOIC-packages, how difficult would it be for a novice to solder that?

Not that hard, if you mean the regular 14, 16, 18, 20 pin SOICs.

You can solder almost anything short of a BGA by hand, if you have a steady hand. Tutorials are available on Youtube.

For BGAs, you need a steady hand plus a clothes iron smile

or Mike Harrison's SMT Toaster Link2

He's wrong though, you can get toaster ovens in the UK: I've seen them in John Lewis. They're probably called something else.

Seems like SMD's will be the way to go then. Thank you all.

..but they are not nearly as common as they seem to be elsewhere... apart from SMD soldering, I can't really think what you'd use one for if you already have a pop-up toaster and a normal oven. "Mini Oven" brings up a few possibles at Argos.
This one from CPC seems promising - bought one recently but only toasted a couple of small PCBs in it so far - not sure how even the heating will be for bigger boards.
