I was just wondering if there were any free programs available to draw schematics? Since most everyone posts schematics here all nice and neat I would feel kinda lame by writing one with pencil and paper and taking a picture of it to post rolleyes but I have been known to do stranger things. So is everyone here paying for software or is there something free?

The trial version of CadSoft's EAGLE is very functional and usable. Many of the people here use it. gEDA might be a good choice, but I have never really liked it.

I use eagle and find it very easy to use and quite intuitive.
If I lived in the states and/or had a credit card, I would probably use pcbexpress, but that could be a dangerous thing.

Ok, thanks for the info. I might try a few of the mentioned suggestions this weekend and see how they are... if I dont get called into work! Come to think of it I have an old version (circa '96 maybe) of Electronics Work Bench (aka EWB) somewheres but I cant seem to find it.

actually there is a pcb express for free. heres a few sites.
http://www.pcb123.com/
http://www.olimex.com/pcb/dtools.html
http://www.expresspcb.com/ExpressPCBHtm/Download.htm

That basically covers most of the ones that I could find. hope that helps. shades

Whatever you do, don't use EWB. It's the worst software I've ever used. It seems to put wires where it wants them, and sometimes if you try to fix it, it will get worse. Go for Proteus lite if you want really nice shchematics and don't mind a 10 second nag-screen everytime you save or Eagle if you want a generally good program (and a great PCB design program).

I have used EWB for several years... high school and college (beleive versions 4 and 5 maybe no idea what the current version is). It served it purpose and was a great tool back then. I do however remember the wire placement issue... it was sometimes a PITA. Usually that was just caused by to much stuff in the way and if everything was spaced out nice it was easy to get it too look the way you wanted it to.

I use Rimu Schematic. Free version is limited to 100 pins. Making multiple pages gets around that. Registered version is fair priced. Good library and easy to create/add parts libraries.
