I need something (free) that can record 16 bit 44khz stero audio while rhapsody player is running without either of them lagging or dropping audio.

Audacity always seems to skip a few tens of ms here and there, even when saving to ram.

What method are you using to record? Do you have a 1/8inch going from out to in? I know that some audio cards have the ability to record from output within the card.

It sounds like the issue you're having is due to overloading the sound card and causing it to lag, skipping a few ms. Audacity itself is very lightweight and I have not had recording issues with it in the past.

What kind of audio hardware are you running?

If you are using this to remove DRM then yeah, make sure that you have things set up for loopback recording. Usually under xp you can set the record mixer (you open the volume control and do like properties and select recording as the device) and then do the 'mixer' tab instead of the line/mic in. That might help a little, although I would look for services running on your computer other than rhapsody/audacity that might be locking it up here and there. One thing you could try is cooledit, that has been around since the 90s...

I've been capturing Wave out mix, yeah. I'm using a soundmax card.

I've tried killing off ALL my background apps, even AV and it still skips here and there.

I'll try cooledit.

Plan B is just to have one computer with rhapsody player and another with audacity, hooked together with low resistance stero cable. However this won't work right now since my second computer with a good sound card is currently lacking an HDD...

Hmm Yea those are always pretty useful :)

However, you could run Audacity on an Ubuntu live CD, record to RAM, and transfer the file over to your system after recording has completed.

Or you could use the Ubuntu live CD to play your track, though I don't believe Rhapsody will run under Wine.

Just a thought.

I've always been plagued by skipping, pops and snaps when using the Windows audio system to do anything remotely adventurous.

The fundamental problem is that Windows isn't a real-time operating system, so it doesn't guarantee perfect audio. Since dropouts aren't forbidden, Gell-Mann's principle Link2 guarantees you'll get one now and again, and always at the worst possible time.

Unplugging your Ethernet cable or wi-fi card can help, since the network stack often gets in the way of the audio system.

I don't know if it would work but you could maybe try ASIO: Link2

Or wait, if you don't use sound card I guess it won't work.
