It's finally released: Ubuntu Linux 8.04! Link2

It's time to welcome Ubuntu to this century. I've now been using the RC for a few days and I'm really satisfied with it. Every single hardware driver installed automatically. In many other ways Ubuntu has been developed a lot from the last Long Time Support release 6.06.

The user interface has been polished so much that I could recommend the new Ubuntu 8.04 to any beginner who wants to learn how to use Linux. Also anyone who is using the old 7.10 version: upgrade!

Those were just my first experiences of the new Ubuntu. You can post your experiences and opinions here.

I'm using lighter version (and more console type tongue), Xubuntu. I didn't notice any interface changes, nor speed. Upgrading replaced few configuration files, so I had to mess with it, but now it's working fine. I personally think that upgrading froma 6.06 to 7.10 gave much more benefits (mainly in terms of stability) than from 7.10 to 8.04.

The main reason I've upgraded was newer kernel, just in case for new devices, and I was hopping for faster file browsing :)

How's everyone doing with it? Any major pros or cons with Hardy as compared to Gutsy or Feisty? Anyone run in to any major problems?

I'm debating whether to switch back to Ubuntu from Mint, or just wait for the new Mint to come out. I'm sort of torn between my love of Mint and my desire for up to date software.

I put 8.04 on the box we got for doing CAD work at robotics, and everything seemed to go well. The main problem I have with it at the moment is that vmware doesn't play nice with it, although I managed to get vmplayer working using the any-any-update116. Other than that getting Nvidia's drivers installed and compiz-fusion working went without a hitch, not a single conf file needed to be touched amazed Certinly beats the crap out of the hours I spent getting that working when I was using v5

But all of the hardware JustWorked, and overall it runs lightning fast (although one a quad core 2.66GHz Xeon bo with 3 gigs of ram and a quadro 3400fx it had damn well better run good...)

One problem I've just faced that some fullscreen games don't want to go fullscreen, they leave windowed and the gnome panels stay on the screen. I don't know if it's caused by compiz-fusion, I still have to try without it.

Updated from 7.10 to 8.04 and all went well, no problems at all upgrading. Ubuntu just gets a lot better every release.

I think I should also upgrade. Currently I am running on Kubuntu 6.10 and /var on it's own partition. Years ago I was so stupid that I didn't put /home on it's own... Now some problems exists with 40G /home. I have also Windows XP (luckily rm -fr isn't very difficult to write) relic on this device, and things aren't easy...

Have you tried VirtualBox?

Yeah, I ran into that problem too. It took me a while to pull all the proper parts together to make a working vmware player, but it does indeed work now. If I recall correctly, virtualbox has the same problem, as it's a problem with open vm tools, which virtualbox uses as well. Besides, I needed to run a vmware appliance.

Other thoughts and impressions, hmm. The updated wine is nice. I can run Steam and Source engine based games. I'm actually liking firefox 3. I hated the rich results bar when I first started, but I've grown to like it. Typing the title of a webpage and having it come up is pretty cool. ubuntu-restricted-extras continues to work nicely. My nvidia drivers installed without a hitch.

Oh, one problem.. The new iwl (intel wireless) drivers are used (replacing ipw), and although my laptop can suspend now (yay!), wireless doesn't work when it resumes. I don't know what kept it from suspending (waking was the problem, actually) before, maybe it was wireless and this is an improvement, I dunno. I'm so used to not having suspend that it doesn't bother me a whole lot, heh.

Brasero is a pretty nice tool for disc burning, I used it recently. Support for burning ISOs is simple and easy enough that I generally don't bother using the command line for it.

Gripe about FF3: my userContent.css is ignored. Lame. I blame the fact that it's in beta. *waits for a fix*

I can't think of anything else worth noting right now.

I use vmware because it is a lot mature than virtualbox. I can drag/drop files from the host into the guest, have a library of premade guest OSs around, am familiar with it, etc.

I also am pretty sure that virtualbox only released a crippled version of their product that is free (in freedom, both of them are free as in beer), that can handle usb devices (very important for my applications, since we need to program the robots with it)
