Hi Dave,
You can actually make a completely analog tuner with memories. The idea is to couple a pot to the "screwdriver" thingy so it knows where it is. You can then compare the voltage from this pot against another pot by wiring them in a Wheatstone bridge, and drive the motor with the error signal. The motor will turn until the two pots are equal and then stop.
The "memories" would be a bunch of 10-turn trimmers, a rotary switch and a small screwdriver :P

Wow. Thats a fantastic idea. That would take a pretty sizable pair of pots though, unless some sort of setup could be made where the error between the two pots is amplified linearly by a transistor (that idea hurts my head). I believe the motor is about 10w, so they'd have to be chunky. Maybe a couple big rheostats, but I'd never get it inside the antenna mast.
I'll do a bit of research on it tonight so I can really understand it. This might be just the ticket for an autotuner project I've been thinking about for months for the shack at home.
That would sure beat the tar out of the present design I've got in mind, though I've actually got a PCB almost laid out for it. I just need to find some dimensions for the relays it will be using.
