I used some random inductor I found on a board from a scanner. I never checked anything except for the inductance on it. 20 ohms sounds a bit much, I'd try an other inductor, if you don't have any with the right inductance, something close will probably do.

Out of everything I had to change, the inductor was the one thing which was working. After breadboarding a 555 based boost converter running roughly the same frequency and duty cycle, I eventually settled on a BD139 and 2.7k base resistor. How he, and you Anders, got it to work with 337's baffles me, as even with a 120k load the voltage wouldn't rise above 6-7V. After installing the new components, the voltage was still only 9-10V. It seemed it was being loaded to much, so I switched over to this version and it worked like a charm.
Before I celebrate too much, what was the function of the removed transistor and diode (Q6 and D2)? Are they needed for installing new firmware through USB? To me they just seem to form another regulator.

I made the mini version too. The stuff around Q6/D2 is not needed if you use it for in-circuit programming. I might have used some different parts than the original design, that might be why mine worked right away.
