I've been looking for a DIY USB PIC programmer, but I haven't found anything but commercial products. Is there a DIY programmer out there?

Buy from 'Microchip Direct" the PICkit2 Link2
in UK it's GBP17 ++

It's usb and fully integrated with the development tools
and you can get demo/evaluation boards, in-circuit-emulation, de-bugging etc.

I bought a JDM type programmer which works well
but I wish I'd bought a PICkit2 instaed.

You will not have much luck finding a USB PIC programmer to build. The whole USB driver hurdle is far beyond what most people find enjoyable. There are some kits that are reasonable priced, I am not sure about the quality of the drivers for those.

I would rather make one that interfaced using the sound card or Ethernet, or even RS-232 using a USB<-->RS-2323 converter.

Due to the nature of the USB port, you can't just hack in a few resistors and hope for the best.

You can, however, build JDM programmer to program a single PIC, and then use him as a usb programmer. I know the schematics/code for the PICkit1 from microchip is available for download, but it doesn't support a whole lot of pics. I believe the firmware is avaiable for the PICkit2 (which supports a whole lot more chips) is available, but I didn't see a schematic anywhere. Although it wouldn't suprise me if it is the same as the PICkit1...

But in the end, for the time it would take to build one, you may as well just have bought one off ebay or the likes. Just make sure that whatever you get, it has support for all of the chips you ever plan on using.

Something like the PICkit 2 was what I was looking for, just with a more common PIC, oh well. I'll make or buy one if I ever have to rely on my laptop. Btw, the schematic for it is on the third last page of this datasheet.

Thanks for the advice.

It's irrelevant what PIC is inside the PICkit2;
you connect your pic to the ICSP port (In Circuit Serial Programming)
this port also can supply the power to the device being programmed.

Great find Anders.

Sulaiman, I meant the PIC holding the firmware for the programmer, something as exotic as the 18F2250 is hard to come across. It would nice with a 16F84 version. wink

Microchip give free samples, 18F2550 is available.

I doubt an 16F84 could handle usb.
