It's no secret I like tinkering with old computers. It would be handy if I could also use one for watching video - particularly DivX encoded anime.
This one I've got in mind is a 500MHz Pentium with 256MB RAM and an old S3 Virge graphics card, IIRC. Running Win2k and the usual DivX player, it almost works but there's just enough lag with the audio to make it not worth it.
I also have FreeBSD on the computer. I'm wondering if I'm likely to get a significant enough performance boost if I run software on nix that's stripped down enough - something like MPlayer on Hackedbox.
Has anyone tried this sort of thing or can recommend software?
VLC includes player + codecs, while ffdshow is just codecs. So you will need a player to go with ffd, I would recommend media player classic. I would try VLC first, and if it still isnt fast enough it should drop frames and stay synced (afaik).
You have plenty of ram for 2k, and I cant see installing linux as freeing up a whole lot of CPU cycles (unless you have a bunch of crap running in the background). So IMO I dont think you will see much of an improvement there.
