"XP lives on OLPC:

It flopped quite badly with the original OS, maybe this will boost the sales or maybe it was just a silly idea from the start."

The OS would cost more than the hardware that it is installed on.

"Yay. I still want one, even though I'd get more computing power for less money buying a used laptop off Ebay."

You are right. I had purchased a nice 1Ghz notebook for $150 a while ago. No need to buy a brand new budget machine.

OLPC pays $3 for each licence so you are off by a factor of 70.

Thats no fair. How come customers need to pay $200 or more for a full copy of windows?

$3 is far more for someone that has no money than $200 is for someone that has more than enough, so $3 is not really cheap in this context.

There are large economic changes happening around the world and countries like the USA are quite small when it comes to population and will become less significant in the future. In India alone it is possible to sell 5 times more copies of Windows than in the USA.

So by selling cheap now they can build up a huge future market for software.
