Where would most of the magnetic flux be in an air cored solenoid close wound using insulated iron wire,
or in a partially stretched slinky ? Link2
what would the field look like?

A quick google produced nothing but I'm sure I read something in the past,
I'm off to do more searching but I thought that this may be a nice mental puzzle hence this post.
If you already know ... what is the answer ?

Download FEMM4.2. Its a freeware 2.5D mag/electro/current/thermal field solver. That will tell you all you need to know

I do not the answer but I feel if you googled

I do know I have two Helmholtz coils here.

Generally speaking I can imagine field shapes;
bar magnets, short or long solenoids, transformer air-gaps etc
If the wire was copper then I'd just treat it as a solenoidal winding,
if the iron wire is laid along the air cored flux lines then I can imagine it,
or even as an iron helix inside OR outside of the winding,
but when the winding wire itself is iron ?
