Sorry if this is old news for some of you, but I thought it was great.
Executive summary: Intel's C compiler and math libraries are widely used in the (Windows) computer industry. It was recently discovered that they check the CPU's vendor string at runtime, and deliberately go slower if it doesn't read "GenuineIntel".
Perhaps the ultimate irony: AMD's own Core Math Library was made with the Intel Fortran compiler, and runs faster if the vendor string is changed to Intel.

Actually, in some cases the Intel i7 runs slower because the virtual core to physical core 2:1 ratio causes serious contention problems for some software.
In retrospect I could have saved $200 per unit, and purchased more i5 ks. Intel has started to act a bit like Sony sleaze the past few years...
Still waiting for the HP ARM based servers to arrive next year...

@ Carbon_rod, as for the hyperthreading problems I could not agree more, some things work well with it others not. You can usually turn it off in the BIOS

@ Steve, well that sounds about right for Intel. Underhandedness for them is par for the course (div by 0 fiasco among others springs to mind). At least historically, AMD processors can do math!
