PID loops in C for embeded processing.

In regards to PID loops for motion control, does anyone know how to do the math in C for Integrals and Derivatives?
Im not totally familliar with C, i mostly do C++, is there a .h for this kind of thing?

EDIT: math.h doesnt work.

Hi Patrick

Integrals and derivatives are concepts from calculus that work on continuous smooth functions. Digital systems are sampled, so you have to use approximations.

To "integrate", add all the samples up, or use Simpson's rule.

To "differentiate" (technically a "discrete difference") take the difference between the current sample and the previous one.

These approximations are just simple digital filters. The integrators are IIR and the differentiator is FIR.

The tricky bit is doing your integrator in fixed point math without excessive rounding errors.

with C, the biggest thing is to make sure you have a loop with a fixed run time. The total time for the loop to run once is dt. To integrate f, simply,

x += f*dt;

To differentiate g,
g_current = g;
y = (g_old - g_current) / dt;
g_old = g_current;

Those are a couple really basic loops to give you an idea. Of course, those both depend on knowing dt at all times. You could either hard code it in, or have a timer set up to measure the time between samples.

Steve and Turkey, my professor said as much. ill write some code, im using the Cortex M3 from ST, so with embedded code ill have certainty of time interval.

great sources!!! but i dont think FPGA's are the wisest of implementations for this purpose.
