Alright so my family is having the problem where our internet just randomly quits working about once a month and in order to fix it we have to turn off, then turn back on, both the modem and router. It's not a big deal or anything but it is a little annoying considering that none of our neighbors have this problem, so I'm wondering what the solution is? We already had Comcast come out and they replaced our modem. On top of this, the interenet also usually shuts off when we're installing updates on our PS3, which is very annoying because the internet dies halfway through installing the netflix update and thus we can't use netflix. Anyone know what's going on?

"Quits working" is not analytical enough. What does work?

Open a command prompt, and see if you can ping your router, or your modem, or a printer/NAS box on your LAN. If you can see those, can you see anything of the net? Try pinging your ISP's DNS, or the google DNS at 8.8.8.8. Then try for a named destination like 4hv.org.

My similar "quits working after a week" problem was due to a non-flushing router DNS cache, but even if your problem is different, yoour analysis will start the same.

Alright, sorry, I am not very experienced in computers. If I open anything that uses the internet on my computer it wont work. I have a windows desktop computer wired in, if I try to repair the internet I get a message that I have limited or no connectivity.

How do I ping things?

EDIT: I called comcast and they said that I can come in and pick up a new router. Ours is a Linksys, model #: WRT54G

For a start, wikipedia ping.

Your router will have an address, like the google DNS address which I gave above, 8.8.8.8, my router is 192.168.1.1. The overwhleming majority of routers start 192, as this is an address range range reserved for small LANs. Yours will be in the router documentation. Your ISP's DNS address will be in the documnetation from your ISP.

Open a command window on your PC, and type (don't inlcude the quotes) "ping 8.8.8.8". If you get a reply, then a lot is working, because you can talk to google's DNS way out in netspace somewhere. If you don't, try "ping router_address", or "ping ISP's DNS". Which ones work, and which ones don't, will tell you where the fault is. Each fault location has a different fix. "Ping 4hv.org" works too, if you can see a DNS.

If I open something that uses the internet (a browser?), "it won't work" is not analytical enough, what does work?

Is "it" the browser, or the internet connectivity, or the operating system. My browser has a habit of going, and staying, offline if the internet connection is flaky. That's certainly one of the many things to check.
