I was just thinking the other day, and was wondering; hows the Internet transferred between continents? Because cables would just be impractical, and satellites would be to slow? I googled it, but couldn't find much information there. Anyway tell me if you find out, it's had me puzzled.

I read an article about this in PopSci. Amazing really, a tiny optical cable with soooo much shielding and armoring. Terremark, the largest gateway to the US (think of it as the ISP for the US) has some ridiculously secure facilities. E.G, 60 miles away from D.C (just outside nuclear blast zone of the capital), stocked for several weeks to be manned through a hurricane, armed guards, etc.
