Yeah, the OLTC worked ok. I was able to hit about 45" running off 120V. Tried running off 240V once, blew the connection out at the street. It was 15 years old, and underground. The guy from the electric company was surprised it didnt fail sooner. Lost my free time and interest in it after that. (graduating college, getting married.)
The bricks are pretty slow. Like 5uS turn on/off worst case. Should be interesting to see how it does. Here's the datasheet:
Power source for now will be the OLTC voltage tripler fed from the 240V mains coming in. I have 100A service and I'm atleast 100ft from the pig (probably closer to 150-200ft). That will probably be my limiting factor. During the hot summer days, the florescent lights in my lab would barely run. 95V with both my air conditioners running (one of them on the same circuit as the lights.)
I hope I have enough heatsink for them. If not, I'll stick a crapload of fans on it.

Those IGBTs are from a traction inverter on an electric locomotive or something, right? That's the only thing I can think of that needs such big bricks.

They can also be used in high-power inverter such as for wind or solar power plants...
