Primary wound, took 4 hours!, just need to cut off the excess copper :-

Squaring up and marking the corner pillars to drill them for the inserts :-

4889151223 7f3ca3d3cd Z

The wood (utile) is going to need a bit more work, sanding, varnishing etc. later but the base is taking shape :-

Test piece for the primary cable gland, I haven't done much work with PVC before so wanted to check I could tap it OK before attacking the actual base. :-

Looks OK but lucky I did a test, look at the state of the other two holes smile

Couldn't do much to it today but it's getting there. Unfortunately the tube for the secondary was supposed to turn up last week but didn't frown Hopefully I'll get it next week.

Seems UPS have lost the secondary tube frown As I haven't ordered up any of the electronics bits yet the project has stalled a bit. Today I made up a nice Brass thumbscrew out of a surplus belt idler from an old bank note reader and an M6 screw :-

Solder idler wheel to screw (or is it screw to idler wheel)

4898335369 A00665d127 Z

A bit of cleaning up.

4898929338 5cf3642061 Z

And a bit OTT but rather nice ground lead attachment for the strike rail (I also made a small grub screw to secure the strike rail tube out of the same screw)

4898338531 1aae427f04 Z

In the absence of the tube looks like I'll be getting onto the topload sooner than expected I've never done any spinning but luckily there is a spinners near me and they've been quite helpful with advice. first is a cad drawing of the two forms needed. The stepped outline is because I'll be glueing sheets together and I'll pre-cut them into rings to reduce the amount of wood I have to remove when turning the forms :-

Finally got started on the secondary.

Is this overkill? (actually the hoists were already there from when I installed the lathe smile )

Modified pedometer as turns counter, secured with cable ties and gaffer tape (of course!)

The lathe has been geared as low as it can go and I'm using a 3 phase inverter drive to control the motor speed. I started around 8Hz but have got it up to about 12 Hz now. It's taking around 15 minutes to do 100 turns I stop for a while every 100 turns as I'm worried about the motor overheating if run slowly for long periods. For winding I control the motor and tension the wire with my left hand and use the back of my right thumbnail to guide the wire and keep the coil tight on the former. I tried to upload some video's but I'm having issues with You tube at the moment.

and finally managed to get the vids uploaded to Youtube

Thanks, finally managed to get the vids uploaded. I upped the motor speed as I felt more confident so only took an hour to finish it tonight. Still deciding on varnish vs. epoxy although I guess I could varnish it and then epoxy it later.
