I'm leaning towards AVR as a friend who does some amazing microcontroller stuff recommended it. He's currently working on a 480xsomething vga controller

I think it's a good choice. I once found a free code for my ATMEGA644P to play tetris on my TV. Was cool.

Link2 found this recently, uses same chip. But yeah, It takes time to get this far, but it shows what you can do...very open enviroment

Hi Download and all, I have been checking out some of these links for the arduino platform and the FEZ controllers.

Link2

if one is starting out like me what would be a good platform to go with. I like FEZ because it has more options like sd card, video options, usb out, Internet capability ect. and a bunch of analog and digital ports. the thing is I know little about C#

Link2

and there will be a little bit of a learning curve for me. Should I spend the time to learn C# or try the arduino platform because there is a bigger community and more projects to draw from. looking for more expiriencde opinions

I've been looking at Link2

They seem to have a pretty active forum and fairly comprehensive kits. It seems to use a very user-friendly interface.

Does anyone have experience with them? I'm fairly new to microcontrollers, also. I do have experience with C/C++ and have programmed two PICs with a lot of guidance and provided libraries and explicit instruction as well as equipment provided, but now I'm looking to do a fairly complex system from scratch.

Why not try the TI lauchpad? They just released it a few months ago, and at 5 bux a board, you really can't go wrong. I've never used it myself, but I've heard only good things about it.

edit: e107 keeps failing with the link, so you need to copypasta it yourself.

I only linked the St stm32 discovery board because the topic of ARM3 MCU's was brought up, which have as wide a selection as any 8 or 16bit MCu.

I jumped right into the XMOS line of processors. I like it a lot, and it was not too difficult. Tons of power too.

Nobody loves the 8051 any more ?

Well here's another alternative :
Link2
It used the Cortex M3.They have an online compiler with oodles of ready made libraries which are free if you buy one of their modules.
