Finally I have received more details on this device: (after I built another multiplier from scratch, will post later)

MODEL : NEC521/89EG60SS
SERIAL : 6290-1 5V PROG
INPUT V: 115V/60Hz
OUTPUT V : +/-60kv/0,3MA
GLASSMAN HIGH VOLTAGE

Any hints on how to build an optimal driver?

1n5ane, what PSU model do you have? Can you share the schematics?

Unfortunately, I don't own a glassman PSU. My only experience with these PSUs is attempting to repair one for a friend.

IIRC, glassmans use some sort of PWM control to drive the "flyback", a voltage divider and comparator/microcontroller is used to regulate the voltage.

Judging by the capacitor ratings, the max voltage output for each flyback is 5KV AC; it's probably most likely 4.5kV AC. If you know the turns ratio, you can calculate the appropriate drive voltage.

I built a 28 Stages multiplier from scratch today, and put it under oil (yes, this one had corona). Connected it to the same 555 driver and got only 2.5cm (~1inch) discharges!

See it here:

or here:

So probably something's wrong with the 555 driver I was using. I will run some more tests using a feedback driver.

That seems to be about what to expect if your input is indeed around 5kv.

Here is my Marx, which operates on the same principal, but using a different mechanism to achieve the seriesed caps... Link2 I had 20kv input (well, pretty close anyway) and 4 stages, and i got about an inch or so spark. That would be about 80kv, which the spark size agrees with. Well, with 5kv input, and 20 stages... 5k*20= 100kv, so the spark would be about the same length as mine...

Those supply transformers do not Have much insulation, and considering the output is AC, it would definitely break down if it was the voltage of the EHT supply in TVs. At 30kvac with a typical DC LOPT who's diodes have been bypassed, sometimes there will be huge amounts of corona all along the windings reaching to one leg of the core, and they have great insulation, for DC.
