I am planning to build a battery powered VTTC. I saw here http://wiki.4hv.org/index.php/Vacuum_Tube_Tesla_Coil that some vacuum tubes were recommended. I would like to know if these vacuum tubes are compatible with a lantern battery as a power supply and a camera flash board circuit as a driver.

Thanks in advance : )

I build and restore antique radios and can tell you this. It wont work. Even if you got a high voltage switching supply (a low power tube is around 100-300 volts) The tube is using up 200 watts. Even a heavy duity car battery would only last for around 10-20 minutes. also there is the filliment, a 12 volt filliment tube is using up 1 amp in a high power tube. So, just make a sstc. save the 833as for a kick ass tesla coil! cheesey

hey doctor,

did you have a zenth transoceanic?

Well, the thing is that the tesla coil i am going to build has to be battery powered. I can't use power from a wall plug.
I have found plans for a battery powered VTTC and a battery powered SGTC, which are respectively http://www.capturedlightning.org/hot-streamer/electrontube/minivttc.htm and http://4hv.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?36853.post . I haven't seen anything about a battery powered SSTC yet.
That's because most of the plans i see use flybacks/MOT/NST/ignition coils transformers as HV power supply all of which need power from the mains, so you can assume from the above that powering my tesla coil would be one of the most difficult things for me since i can't find a suitable transformer, except the ones that come from camera flash boards which i don't know how to connect to the circuit since i am a begginer at electronics.

The majority of flyback drivers I've seen run off 12V. The HVwiki explains how to rewind a MOT to yield a 12:2000 volt transformer. Ignition coils are designed to run off car batteries (12V) and most drivers I've seen are similar or the same as flyback drivers.

You're right about NSTs, though. They require mains. :)

You'll want a TV flyback, DC without any internal capacitors. Post a picture before buying so we can confirm that it's okay. Any flyback will do, but the one I described won't need extra measures.

One last question. Is there a site that i can buy one of those?
I ve heard that ebay is not reliable for such purchases.
