I have an SRSG that I'm trying to get lined up correctly with the 60hz A/C wave and am having a hard time. I'm using a propeller style gap with a 1/8" tungsten electrode as the spinning electrode. I tried using a fluorescent light, but couldn't clearly see the electrode, so I got the idea of marking the electrode with fluorescent paint and using a black light. That didn't work either.

I guess what I really need is a strobe that is synchronized to the A/C line. An LED strobe using white LED's would be fine, but I can't seem to find a schematic for anything like that.

Any ideas?

I don't know if it's got the bandwidth, but finding cheap strobe lights around Halloween is pretty darned easy.

I've got a strobe light that I can turn up fast enough to make the electrodes almost stationary, but I have no idea if the strobe is triggering from the A/C feed or off some internal oscillator.

I aligned my first SRSG using an oscilloscope. I secured a magnet in place of one of the flying electrodes, and put a coil of wire where the stationary electrode would be, and observed that waveform against the line voltage.

But that alignment does not yield the best result. Under load, conditions change, so you need a phase adjuster.

Check out Terry Blake's web site at -> Link2 for how he aligned his gap using photography.

Info on a John Freau phaser can be found here: Link2

This will give you the ability to adjust the phase angle by 15-30 degrees or so, depending on how you set it up. Then, you can start with your gap in a particular position "close" to the correct final position, and adjust the phase dynamically until the firing is right.

At this point, I can't imagine running my SRSG coil without a phaser.

Cheers,
Joe

Alchemist -

Years ago Terry Fritz developed an AC-line synchronized strobe light for setting/checking SRSG electrode alignment. This was based on a cheap Radio Shack "party strobe" with a few component values changed. Within the past year I found one of these strobes on eBay, new-in-the-box, for $9.99 (must be the exact model number specified in Terry's modification).

The modification instructions should be able to be found on any of the Hot-Streamer mirror sites, although I don't have a direct link right at hand.

UPDATE: Here is a link to the modifications instructions:
