 General Questions about magnifiers

I'm in the process of gathering pieces and parts for a small/medium magnifier system. In browsing around the internets, I come across these two images:

As you can see, the space between the resonator and primary/secondary is vastly different with each coil, which is where my questions come from.
What effect does space between the coils have on output (spark length)?
Could the resonator couple with the secondary if they're too close?
Rather than spacing them laterally, what might happen if I space them vertically?
Should I just shut up, build something, do tests and find out for myself? 
Any input is muchly appreciated!

If you're truly interested in magnifier design, search GOOGLE for Richard Hull's Tesla coil videos for the TCBOR (Tesla Coil Builders of Richmond). Richard has a wide array of VHS videos available on magnifier design and build which are top notch.
