You "ran out of wire" when your secondary was less than half way completed?? When you designed your Tesla coil, how many feet of wire did you calculate would be required to wind a 4.5" X 54" secondary? What led you to select a 12:1 height:diameter aspect ratio, rather then the well-proven 4:1 or 5:1 ratio?
Sorry, but I must ask: have you completely "designed" this coil on paper, or via the use of Tesla coil design software?
Do you know the resonant frequency of your new "half-size" secondary? What are the dimensions of your topload? What is the required capacitance value of your tank capacitor, and how many primary turns will be required to bring the primary and secondary circuits into resonance?
If you don't have your design complete (or don't have a clue what any of this means), then you need to STOP construction, do your homework, completely design the coil, then carefully build the coil EXACTLY as designed. A Tesla coil is NOT just a few random coils of wire thrown together; it is a special type of circuit very carefully designed and assembled to achieve "resonance".
If you don't know EXACTLY how a Tesla coil works, and what electrical parameters need to be controlled achieve resonance, spend as much time as required here: reading up on the design, construction and theory-of-operation of spark-gap Tesla coils.
If you DID completely design the coil, post your design data here and the forum members will review it for you to help identify any problem areas before you get too far into construction.
