Hi guys, I am trying to make an ozone generator. I have a ZVS driven flyback going to a glass with tinfoil around the inside and outside. there is no hiss or corona discharge or anything. The voltage is at least 8kv. Do I need to ground one side of the flyback to get corona?

ok i have discovered something strange. when i move the electrode thats attached to the foil thats on the outside of the glass away, it arcs to this foil as if the glass wasnt even there! how can the outside and inside foil be making contact? is it acting as a capacitor??

more experimentation - I took the outside foil off and arc'd to the glass using a wire - small arcs and corona and ozone which is what i wanted. this thing must be acting as a capacitor lol! I guess i have to use wire mesh instead?

hmm, just tested it with a function gen and oscilloscope - 1mhz passed parallel into the 'capacitor' and no attenuation seen - im so confused now

how about jm's 100kv flyback driver, that creates lots of corona:-D

if you heat up glass, it becomes conductive.

Yes it does, but you need to get it quite hot. From what I understand you have 2 pieces of foil separated by a piece of glass. That is a capacitor and at HVAC it will be conductive. Typically when I need ozone I use to pieces of aluminum mesh separated by a 3/32" lexan sheet. I then full wave rectify the power source.

Why would this capacitor only attenuate high voltage 20KHz signals, yet not attenuate a low voltage 20KHz signal? I also coiled a wire around the glass and the same thing happened. I do have a working system now though :-

(p.s cheers for the input)

I don't think the capacitor was to blame. I pin the fault on corona, and looking at your picture there is tons of it. With a low voltage signal corona doesn't happen and it passes right through the cap unharmed. When you crank up the volts however, a lot of power is lost as corona and the signal tends to be weak and filled with noise.
