Ive tried to make a few of the tesla coils with very, little success. The only one I managed to get work was the class E.All I could get out of it was about half a inch bright bue/purple flame like discharge, Yet that only lasted a few seconds untill mosfet got warm. It even was on a heat sink no fan thou. Last night I tried the http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC5/miniSSTCfnlsch.JPG The ucc37322 Instantly died and started giving off smoke. Replaced it with a new one. And that one practically blew up. Checked the wiring a few times over its the exact same as the picture. All it seems I'm doing is killing gate drivers and cooking mosfets. Swapped out a few parts, changed D1,D2 to a fast diode. I did increase C6 to 0.33. D7,D8 were changed to 1n914 ( I think the letters are too small ). Not using a 74HC14 the one I have dosnt seem to be doing anything. Also I dint have any tantalum capacitors, Stuck in some ceramics But I still don't get what is killing stuff so easily. Only running on 30 volts 1 amp.

Now my question is, Why is my ucc37322 blowing up. Do I need the tantalum capacitors. Why do my mosfets get super hot only within a few seconds?
Also have a question about a GDT, I took 3 stands of wire tied it to the door and stuck the other end into a drill and twisted it, Is there a better way of doing it?

if you have built the circuit try connecting pin 1 to 4 with a jumper wire or something. and see if that works.
uh before you do that, how close is your antenna to your coil?
you don't want to have your circuit to close to the coil, but not to far away.

Halfbridge designs are harder to build (in my opinion), try using single mosfet (it doesnt have to be class e)

d1 and d2 are fast ones, d7 and d8 try 1n4148 and ifyou are using 74hc14 try to connect primary in other way around (emm... swap coil ends), and if it still wont clock, try to catch antenna for short time.

are you using ground in secondary?

that TC is so easy to build, theres nothing wrong in schematics.

Sorry for the delayed response (Work has been long days and little sleep). And Quite think it simply was Bad ucc's I, They wornt stored properly. Yet the 321's were in foam and thier fine. Soo seeing that I'll be odering more I might as well pick up some 1n4148, and 74hc14. In the mean time Ive been fooling around with igntion coils untill one arced from the top to the post then inside. Was a very hot arc and long arc about 2 inches. The silly thing is my driver dint even get warm, And was only using 16 volts.

Also I really havnt seen many good Single tranistor circuts. I'll look around thou.

Edit: Oh and yes Im using a ground. Cold water pipe in basment works great for my sgtc
