There are some potential ones ... UWB, ignition systems, deep UV etc. I meant more why don't you see the design more in other research though.
Actually it's much harder to scale up in energy than I initially thought, it might be able to compete with a 2n5551 stack (for a well behaved load) but switching joules is going to be hard. I overestimated the current by an order of magnitude. A single cheap diode will only do 30 KWatt max ... which is not a lot. Also the level of compression is limited, so you still have to switch a lot of power.
