Need small power supply for mini (micro?) SGTC

Anyone have a 4kV NST or maybe even a bug zapper power supply that would work for a tiny SGTC?

I want to build a really small self-contained coil that can put out 3" sparks or so.

I considered scavenging a power supply from a halogen work light to use with a flyback, but I have read where they aren't very reliable...want the power supply to be simple, compact, and reliable, so I am not looking to build a driver for the flyback.

I don't think NSTs are made below 6kV. You could use half of the secondary of a 9kV or similarly rated one for half the voltage by using the ground instead of the other terminal, but that's a waste of copper and iron...

This looks like a job for a DC flyback transformer driven SGTC. The driver+flyback would be smaller and lighter than a NST, and can put out over 20kV at 1 mA. So you'd need a low capacitance and relatively high voltage capacitor for this.

Not to mention, flyback transformers are easy to find. Any old monitor or TV has one. You'll need some protection for it, like a HV resistor and safety gap.

And there are plenty of flyback driver threads to look at. For this you'd probably just want a simple 555 driver.

I have a flyback, and have built a single transistor driver in the past powered with a PC PSU.

I was looking at the halogen power supply to replace the PC PSU and driver circuit if I go that route. I don't want to be constantly troubleshooting and repairing my HV supply circuit, and I want it as small as possible.

Use a ZVS driver, it is the simplest circuit ever. perfect for this application of driving a flyback

Welders that incorporate arc starters typically use a 3600vac 30ma transformer...

If shipping wasn't so expensive, I'd send you a few used units...

Two questions...

1 - Are those self current limiting like an NST?

2 - Would one fit into a medium size flat rate USPS box? (11" x 8 1/2" x 5 1/2")?

Would gladly pay you for one plus the $10 to ship

Yes, they are current limited. I made 2 table top Tesla coils using them. They are on my YouTube page somewhere.

I think they might fit in a box that size. There are several used ones @ work. I'll hafta measure them on Monday.

I don't sell stuff. Ever. If you want a few, you'll just have to pay for the shipping. They are used. I'll see how many are still laying around...
