Well, I melted the windings on accident when they accidentally shorted somewhere. I removed all windings and replaced them with a single winding of 4 gauge wire, and this is easily enough power to melt pennies, quarters, anything worth watching while it melts!

the core is usually not grounded so maybe you had a secondary-core insulation failure... maybe you can rewind it.

That's exactly what happened, there's a nice black mark where they shorted out. However, experimenting with high current is equally fun, as I found out why the pennies seem to "explode" rather than melt nicely like other American coins. Pennies are copper coated zinc, and the inner zinc coin melts rapidly, leaving the copper coating behind. I'll take some pics of some of the coins Ive destroyed. I havent melted a quarter all the way, the insulation on the 4 gauge wire starts dripping off whenever it gets bright orange :)

can you use 1/32 or 1/16 inch welding rod to weld with your mot?

Almost certain it can, It can melt 6 gauge wire, I think it can use welding sticks.

Just go get a 1000W+ microwave and rip out the transformer and rewind it :)
