My (iron powder) GDT is getting hot. I assume it is because there are some losses. But is it common that in more powerful tesla coils gdt gets hot? Should i fix it by replacing to something another?

its not hot much, but temperature rises and i think it should not.

Iron powder is quite lossy at high frequencies (above few kHz...)

So, it is totally normal that at around 100kHz iron-powder cores get hot.

You should switch to ferrite core, which can be used up to 1MHz, at least...

Iron powder GDT? ill No, you really need ferrite for this task...

i could only had iron powder, because ferrite ones are damn expensive here (1.5€ / piece, and i must get more...)

thats what i was most afraid of...

what ferroxcube material is better 3f3 or 3e25 ?

i can choose from

TN16/9.6-3F3 Toroidal ferrite core TN, material 3F3, 1160nH
TN16/9.6-3E25 Toroidal ferrite core TN, material 3E25, 3540nH
TN20/10-3E25 Toroidal ferrite core TN, material 3E25, 5340nH
TN25/15-3E25 Toroidal ferrite core TN, material 3E25, 5620nH this seems to be a good value
TN25/15-3F3 Toroidal ferrite core TN, material 3F3, 1840nH

3f3 is stated for 200-500kHz,
i cant find frequency range for 3e25

thing is - TC will be run somwhere between 300kHz to 1mHz, will that matter?

Hi,

I got my ferrite toroids here at really great place

Link2

they used to sell larger ones as well, although I found these more than enough for most applications.

Don't want to steal this thread, but Marko, do you think those cores are good enough for steves mini sstc. I think this would apply to the poster too.

You need to use ferrite. Iron powder is no good for a gate transformer core.

Well, today i "buy in advance" 10 ferrite toroids, i just hope it will berform better :)

only thing i could choose was some 19mm 3f25 (i didnt go for 3f3, seems 3f25 has wider range), for some 4 euros, which was quite a good deal. They didnt had any bigger and ones i wanted will be available in february 2011, mad

i hope they will come unbroken.

Also i want to mention - i was quite surprised how well it can perform for a iron powder. I was running somwhere between 350-450kHz, and thats quite lot. But it coulndt handle smaller coils.

The toroidal cores from bigger SMPS line filters (common mode choke, two windings on one core) work very well for GDTs. They are ferrite with high permeability.
