I have been pondering and am very curious as to why streamers from VTTCs are generally linear and spearlike while other tesla coils produce branched chaotic streamers. How does the switching component relate to streamer characteristics??

On time is a huge factor. A sgtc has a very small duty cycle, whereas vttc's have an on time of around 15% or more, half that for halfwave rectification. There are plenty of variables though.

I have also been told that sword sparks start at around 350khz to 500khz. I have also personally noticed that sword sparks happen with low frequency power rail modulation. I still don't have a clear answer
