Hey guys !

i got a 3 phase transformer which gives me about 10 kv @ 2 amp

i want to convert the 3phase ac voltage to DC voltage

i want to make it with a 6 pulse rectifier

so i thought 6 strings of 25x 1N5408 doides in series
so it could handle 25 kv at 3 amp
would be 150 diodes

could i use 6 strings of [3strings 25x 1N4007 each]--> would be 18 strings with 25x 1N4007 .
it could also handle 25KV at 3 amp
would be 450 diodes.

because the 1N4007 would be a lot cheaper than the 1N5408
and i would have the same effect.

or is it better if i use the 1N5408?

What power source is the transformer connected to? Can you post a picture of the nameplate, and possibly the transformer?

This may help you desisn your rectifier: it shows 3 types of 3 phase windings connected to 6 rectifiers..

hey...
thanks for your post

do you mean what feed my transformer?

sry it's an old transfrmer ...there's no nameplate on it

i searched on google ...and i found something...

The 1N400x is only rated at 1 amp. You definitely want the 1N5408.

The difference in cost will vanish once you take into account the cost of your labour, rebuilding the diode strings after you blew them a few times. No doubt you'll be messing around with the transformer, pulling giant arcs from it and generally overloading it beyond its rating, so you want the strongest diodes you can easily get.

Diodes aren't supposed to be connected in parallel: they're not guaranteed to share the current equally.

Yes, that schematic above is correct for a 6 pulse rectifier.

okey thanks...

then i'll buy the 1N5408

...another question...

will the diods get hot ?
need they to be cooled ?

i saw a pic from someone who had the same..and he put the diod strings in a plastic tube .

is that good or better when i put them under oil ?!

Are You going to be connecting your transformer to a three phase power source?

How did you find the 2 amp 20kV rating. Thats 69 kVa. What is the other winding voltage?

yes it's a 3 phase power line
400V input

output is about 10kv not 20kv
