Strictly speaking they are not, but it is good practice to always have a zener across your gate when there is the chance of spikes. A zener is much cheaper than a new mosfet!

I don't think the circuit would operate if the supply voltage is less than the zener voltage, mine doesn't. You won't get much output if you're using less than 12v. Output power really starts increasing exponentially above 25v.
Off topic but not thread worthy: Does any one know if the a ZVS driver can be used to power a CO2 laser tube?
