Stephen Hawking 'mistaken for a Simpsons character' Stephen Hawking, the eminent physicist and cosmologist whose books include the seminal A Brief History of Time, has joked that he is often mistaken for a Simpsons character.

Stephen Hawking has joked that he is often mistaken for a Simpsons character.
The scientist, who has appeared as himself several times in the popular American cartoon, said it was the most common misconception people had about his work.
Professor Hawking made the comments to The Guardian newspaper’s Weekend magazine in a debate with Brian Cox, the physicist and broadcaster, about science.
The remark suggests that Hawking, 68, whose latest work is entitled The Grand Design, published this month, feels he is sometimes not properly recognised for his contribution to our understanding of the universe.
Prof Hawking has appeared in cartoon form in many episodes of the long-running show.
In one episode of The Simpsons entitled 'They Saved Lisa's Brain', Hawking says to Homer, "Your theory of a doughnut shaped universe intrigues me. I may have to steal it."
Elsewhere In the Guardian interview the scientist reiterates his belief, disclosed last week, that God was not needed to create the universe.
“Science can explain the universe without the need for a creator,†he said.
In an extract of his new book published in The Times newspaper last week Prof Hawking said the Big Bang was the result of the inevitable laws of physics.
“Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.â€
He added: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.â€
In A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking’s most famous work, he did not dismiss the possibility that God had a hand in the creation of the world.
He wrote in the 1988 book: "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason — for then we should know the mind of God.â€
In his new book he rejects Sir Isaac Newton's theory that the Universe did not spontaneously begin to form but was set in motion by God.
