and no high voltages are involved.
hmmm...
I myself was thinking Magnetic levitation, maybe a car crusher? (Giant can crusher?) wink

Laser skywriting?

A bigger version of Big Dog, Humongous Dog?

Wish I could get out west to see it or any of your other projects.

I am about to start work on a 40A MOSFET pulse width modulation unit for the ******* which will be a part of the electronics. I have spent a frustrating week scouring specs from manufacturers lists of IC's looking for the main specific requirements without luck. I am sure it can be done but I don't want a massive component count. No time for a lot of development in this area.
I was getting to the stage I was going to spill the beans and ask 4HV for help. Almost.
But, thinking I was trying to be too clever, I will make this a little less elegant but a lot simpler. No real change to specs though. Probably a few hundred watts more heat dissipation, but less risk of "letting out the smoke", as it were.
Pondering things mechanical as well but can't progress until I physically receive the parts.

Not much progress on the the electronics yet apart from one small circuit board.
However, I have got a majority of the important components for the project. Many of which came from eBay (about 40 purchases). Only a little change from AU$4000 so far. Well did you expect the worlds biggest to be cheap?
Current power consumption will be around 1.8kW. Much of which ultimately goes to heat a number of cooling fans.
Taking preliminary construction photos tomorrow.
Also meeting my cameraman tomorrow to discuss the video marketing of this project.
Periodic updates to come.

Something that regulates hundreds of amps at not a high voltage...and now you're doing it as a linear regulator not switch mode...

...A ridiculously powerful several-hundred-watt LED driver and array that could be mistaken for the sun?

Hmmmm..... a lot closer but not using the figures I have given you. If I told you this was mobile and drew 1.8kW, could you refine the specifications a little? MOSFET PWM driver now will need to push to 50A.
You have enough information to work out what I am doing.

Further progress:
I have had a few changes in direction to improve this project which is expanded to 3 projects. I am not sure which will be the biggest in terms of media. Time will tell.
Spent an hour shooting a Youtube promo with my cameraman Dean Lomax. It will be edited and should be posted in a day or two.

Here is a mock up of one group of components.
