Hi all,

After weeks of researching and experimenting, I finally got a flyback being driven by an TL494 halfbridge driver working beautifully! It is based on Mads Barnkob's work: Link2

It works well up to 160VDC making large white fiery arcs and the IFRP450's stays relatively cool after short runs.

The problem is when I increase the input voltage to 200VDC, the arcs starts getting a little bit too long for my taste, the MOSFET's heats up more quickly than I wished it to and i don't want to risk burning out my one-and-only 2A variac.

So basically, how do I run this driver at 325VDC without blowing up anything? I want to be able to power it directly off the mains in the UK.

Hi,

to me it looks like your flyback is getting saturated. How many turns are you using for your primary winding? I found 60 to 80 turns to work well for 325V DC. I used frequency of 66kHz. You'll probably either have to increase your working frequency or increase the number of primary turns.

Try doubling your number of primary turns as a starting point.

Ah! I forgot about people used a lot more primary turns than 'usual'. I used 15 turns for primary suprised

It all makes sense now, Ill add more primary turns.

Thanks guys!

change the capacitor to 220uf 400v and the mosfets to irfp460
use 25 turns for primary

Why 220uF capacitor? I am planing to build a 1000uF capacitor bank out of various 450v capacitors I got lying around to get rid most of the buzzing noise to make this driver audio modulated.
