hi folks...

I'm back working on my flyback TC and have the parts for a ZVS driver.

What I don't have is a good power supply. The one I do have has only one positive or negative output, which is sad...plenty for
most 5 V electronics, but not gonna cut it for the ZVS driver. The way I understand it, I can tie the ground plug to either positive or negative to produce one output with X Volts.

I recently pulled a big old transformer from a stereo amp with a few different taps on it. I have never made a dual pos and neg supply before and am a little unsure about how to do it. I was told today that the trick using a capacitor in parallel and taking a lead from the negative side, only works when drawing uA .

Do I need a special transformer with a center tap ?
Until I get to school and can use an O-scope I won't know too much about what I salvaged.
I am hoping that someone will share some common knowledge about this topic.

Thanks again...

Most people use computer power supplies; 12v at ~10 amps.

Do you have any power drill batteries or RC car batteries that you can put in series?

Unless there are specs on that transformer you won't know how many amps it can supply. The problem is that the driver will draw ALOT of current.

I just rectify mains right out of my 20amp variac. That gives me up to 120vdc @ 20 amps. But you'll probably never want to go any higher than 40vdc.

I personally usually just use a rewound microwave oven transformer, with high capacitance on its output (after rectifier) for filtration, then feed that to a ZVS, a varaic comes handy for controlling the mot.

Id preffer to use MOTs over any other supplies, since it is dirt cheap to build, and less chance of killing it in a ZVS compared to some nicer supplies, that SMPS will come handy one day.

Many old stereo amps use a dual polarity power supply like this-that amp probably has the bridge rectifier and the caps too. If the trany weight 5 lbs ballpark will be 50 V CT 4 amps with a 5 amp bridge and 2 3000 ufd /35 volt caps.
