ok, so I replaced the HDD on my laptop with an SSD and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7. I then installed a copy of Ubuntu. Well, while configuring grub I managed to do something wrong and I could not get either one to boot, and the filesystem on Ubuntu got corrupt (no idea how, may not be related to Grub I don't know). I used CloneZilla to copy the Windows partition to an external drive so that I could copy it over to the SSD after doing a format of the drive as the partition manager could not do anything with the Ubuntu space (again, no idea why - it was unmounted, non-busy, etc). When I used clonezilla to make one partition on the SSD for Windows I did just that, but with a problem that has prevented me from making use of space or reinstalling Ubuntu.
The partition manager of Windows says there are two partitions on the drive, a "system reserved" of 100MB (as expected) and the 55GB partition with Windows on it. This sounds like what I'd want, but when I go to my computer or right click Properties on the partition in the manager the partition only then shows a 35GB capacity, which is what I had before I screwed up Ubuntu.

anyone at least know where I might ask for help on this matter? - I really have no idea what's going on here, but I assume it's something with Windows.

Personally, I'd go and ask on Toms Hardware - very knowledgeable types there, and few of the useless twits who have no idea but like to make time-wasting posts anyway...
I had a problem with a corrupt Crucial SSD, and ended up deleting all partitions and starting again, i.e. re-initialising the drive. Worked well in the end... What I did find was that having the latest firmware was important for reliable working...

A computer friend was suggested I just try to reinstall Ubuntu because it's partition manager would make sure my windows files are untouched. So I "resized" the Windows partition to what it has thought it was (35.1GB) so that the number was at least right. I then decided that I didn't need Ubuntu to be so big so I downsized it by 15. However, this became "Free Space" rather than "unallocated" space so I could not extend the Windows Partition, but I ended up not disappointed by simply making a secondary NTFS partition that could be shared by Windows and Ubuntu.
