Hi,

I am in need of new wire for my secondary. I was looking at 1 pound of 26 gauge wire on McMaster Carr. I was wondering if McMaster car has good wire for coiling. It says 'bare copper wire' but don't I need a thin coat of insulation or else it will end up shorting? If anyone knows if it works or not please let me know. Thanks

1 pound of wire isn't much at all, especially at 26 AWG.

Check EBAY for magnet wire. You can get great deals on the stuff.

Like this 6 LB spool of 26 AWG for $24.99
EBay Item #290000167914
This is enough to wind several good sized secondaries.

Well I only need to wrap one secondary and from what I have seen one pound translates to ~1,200ft, which is enough.

okay, you have 2 options:

1. Be a good kid and listen to EVR
2. Place a $180 order with MWS for wire

It's your option.

Personally, I had to go option #2 because I have to consider 'future use', which is what directs my shopping activities. If your 'future use' does not require 17 lbs., I would get-in-gear and buy off ebay before its gone.

if McMaster doesn't list it as coated, it probably isnt. Also, I would suggest staying away from McMaster as their prices are generally high and you should ideally use them as a resource for weird, oddball items unless you have money to burn.

Ebay prices stink and have risen for some items over the years but magnet wire is plenty so go that route for small quantities.

If you can find an electic motor/pump shop they will usualy sell you the ends of big spools for a decent price. I found a place that gave me the end of a 20awg spool for 20$ cad, it had enough to do a 6in secondary.

This your first secondary?
If it is, the likelyhood is that you will snap the wire, kink it, or do something to really upset you at half 1 in the morning.
You will need more wire than you suggest. Listen to others.

I agree that you should try to find a motor repair/rebuild shop and establish friendly relations. I bought 1000’ 26 AWG wire for $3 to build my first coil. I just tonight wound a 4.5” coil with about 1400’ of 24 AWG that they charged me $8 for. Next week I’m going back for 2400’ of 22 AWG for a 6.5” coil. I don’t know how much that’s going to cost, but I’ll bet that it will be about what it will cost you for shipping on ebay.

as does wondermagnet.com, but they get expensive when you try to buy decent quantities...
