Nice graph. When the transformer saturates the current wave flattens into a square-like wave, top and bottom, and the peak responding, RMS calibrated meters are in error. When the SCR controllers first sppeared, we had to use moving iron meters to get measurements. Same with CVT's Their capacitor drove the cores close to saturation. This is what I use now to get the form factor and catch inrush peaks:

The Tong testers are still being made by Columbia-google them. However they
dont look exactly like mine. Btw dont be tempted to use an AC clamp meter on a circuit with DC or a large DC component. You will have great difficulty prying the jaws open after the core gets magnetized, very embarrasing if the power csnt be shut off!.

This is normal, an usual 230volt MOT draws 2-4A unloaded and around 20-25A arcing/shorted. The circuit breaker takes some time to "heat up" thats why it doesnt trip instantly (I can draw 20amps from a 10A breaker for several tens of seconds before it goes).

Hehe, I had this same thing with me today. I was reading my meter on PEAK hold, and it said 24A, and I was thinking to my self, I'm testing a MOT at 70V on a 8A variac, to make sure it works. How the heck do I get 24A out of a 8A fuse. Peaks.

But ya, as Dr. Kilovolt said, Takes time to heat. 15A breaker should never pop at 15A, I think 30A is usually 5-10 seconds?

Thank you very much for your replies!
I was just slightly concerned for the integrity of the breakers.
but your replies have put my anxieties to rest, thanks again!
Nice graph by the way!
I shall retest the MOT soon...
On a different note (I hope this isnt considered too off topic) My resonant setup,
Using 1 MOT, Another MOT as ballast, and 4 MOCs draws a nicer 11Amps, with a much bigger arc (about 10") as well!!
Im getting 1.5Amps out, 11A in
As opposed to: 0.5A out 24A in,
Its amazing what resonance can do!
Measured with an ancient 30 year old 'Avo', as accurate as ever to this very day!

Measuring with the AVO meter is great. This model 8 can measure 2500 volts and up to 10 Amps AC.

I would be cautious with classic instruments on arc experiment transformers. Since I dont know if they can be repaired if they get flashed.

WOW!
I am stunned, that is the exact model I have!
actually my dad (somehow) has 2!
I find them incredibly useful, very difficult to break, unlike the digis we have today...
I have retested my clampmeter on my 110Amp welder and the reading is Aprox. 115A
so I guess The MOT is drawing 24A then... Well, I'm supprised!

"actually my dad (somehow) has 2"

These things seem to linger. I have a number of them from a gentleman who established the first TV station in Pakistan.

Not sure what mine draw constantly...But my single mot when draw, it pulled a PEAK current of 48 Amps. May not help you, but now you know!
