The reason it works on lightning is that most of the time there are several strokes following each other. So you trigger on the first one and photograph the third or fourth one. The camera must be set to manual mode to stop it wasting time on focusing and light metering.
If there is only one spark it will not work since the spark is gone long before the shutter manages to open.

DaJJHman and Bjørn there is a infrared remote and the manual states that can be used in bulb mode. have you tried this?
they work, but the question is delay timing - if you use the bulb mode as Bjorn suggests, which I do in this case, then it shouldn't be much of an issue. But if you want to try to get a timed shot it may be as the processing times for the remotes is a little slow.
but in bulb mode you should be fine. Make sure to post the pics once you get them!

keep in mind that there is some shutter lag, so even if you trigger the remote the exact instant the marx strikes, you will likely miss the spark. You need to either leave the shutter open in bulb, trigger the marx once, then close the bulb shutter, or construct a timer that will automatically open the camera's shutter a few 10's of ms before the marx strikes.

Thanks dugg for the schematic. I have ordered the 3 cables and 2 remotes I think it would be ease make a circuit that would interface these devices. I am thinking that I can scavenge parts from a remote and add the light sensitive trigger to close the shutter. Another option is to use sound to trigger or even EMF. I am sure the marx makes a lot of radio wave noise. I am not sure how long the charge time will be for the marx it may be, a minute or so. I am working on the 40kv power supply now and the trigger switch circuit later. If I use light to close the shutter what light bandwidth might be usefull ie UV, IR visable ect. A spark may produce light in the UV spectrum so the ambient light won't close the shutter?
