Actually you can use an iron core for a field much higher than 1 or 2T. You just need to have "pole caps" on the ends if you use a horseshoe core, so the magnetic field gets concentrated into a smaller space than it would be if the airgap was plane-parallel. A MOT core might be all you need.
I agree with Sulaiman that running 300V rather than 3V is a good idea, just think of how much fun you would have winding a coil for 1000A from copper tubing

No, the unit currently being used (as a footrest right now) draws 30A at max for well over 4 minutes without tripping the thermo cut-out or breaker (no cooling). Notably current regulation techniques are usually required. Water-cooling is neat – but a 50/50 anti-freeze mix is better in some ways.
It’s funny when it turns on as all the lights dim, (The Gauss meter pins in the field as its too sensitive.)

I agree with Joe in using a horseshoe core. Be careful with really strong magnetic fields. It is not the magnetic field itself but the objects that might be attracted to it.
