hi all
I found a bunch of aluminum dryer duct sitting around my basement... I haven't figured out how to connect the two ends...i tried soldering it with a propane torch and promptly burned one up....
Also, how do people connected them in general to their secondary ?

Hi, Go check out a hardware store and buy some aluminum duct tape. Stuff is great and you can use it to not only hold the toroid together but also for smoothing it out to get rid of any possible sharp points besides the main breakout point.
Usually connection might be done via some bolt but depending upon the seriousness of the setup it may be sufficient just to place a good length of the end of the secondary wire (maybe a few inches) and use the aluminum tape to connect it.

First, cut a wood plywood disk. This will fit inside your ductwork. Easy way to connect the ductwork to the plywood disk is to drill small holes on the outside of disk and then using wire (wrapped around the ductwork at regular intervals) to secure it to the plywood. Probably not necessary for small toroids, but works great for real big toroids.

I found some of that Al duct tape ...it sticks great to the other Al ....great stuff I had some stashed away when some work was done in basment...and I found a PVC pipe !!
I wrapped a new secondary my hand, although the next is going on a lathe at school....
