You can make a 3.3V / 5V / 12V power supply with more amps than you'll ever need for little to nothing from an old computer's PSU.
Also, one of those "variety packs" of 500 1/4W resistors is really handy as I find I often need a resistor of some random value.
A good place to look for stuff cheap is corporate bankruptcy auctions. I got a variable soldering iron for $25 and a Tek scope for $120. Look for auctioneers in your area and check their websites, as they list what is being sold.

Hi Hm Murdock, one other "tool" I would suggest is the IRC Chat if you aren't familiar with it already. This allows you to chat in realtime with other 4HV members, which is especially handy when you have quite a few simple questions or just can't wait for a forum reply! Of course people may not always be around but there is usually some conversation to be had. You can check it out by going here:

I like that philosophy of spending more on projects than tools! And I will be looking at the dollar stores tomorrow for a cheap soldering iron...
I am making a power supply out of my PC PSU...had to order the binding posts online though, as the only ones I could find locally were not insulated for metal installation.
