well usually I'm still half asleep at this time in the morning, but I've just been woken up by a very loud bang from my desklamp at work, which is right next to my face.

This isn't a cheapo CFL either, it's a Philips!

Thanks Philips, the lab now stinks of burning electronics. Next time I'll remember to wear eye protection as well.

I have had that happen 5-6 times with different brands, sometimes it takes out the upstream fuse too. It can be surprisingly loud, enough to make your ears ring.

This was the last one, it blew the top of the capacitor cleanly but it was very loud.

Failure of the electronic package seems to have three reasons:
Transient events on the circuit (undervoltage, overvoltage, spikes) .
Planned failure by using marginally adequate parts.
Lamp mortality, cathanodes wearing out.

The lamps themselves may be good for many hours after the ballast has perished.

The capacitors can be used for rebuilding filter blocks when
AA5 (All American Five) radios are restored.

it's a shame they're built so poorly now - they don't last any longer than old incandescent lamps, and the waste is much more hazardous!

I'm going back to filaments - continuous spectrum, less noise, unity power factor, less smelly smile

What about LED smile

I'm glad I saw this, because until very recently -cough- I had all CFLs in my work room to save energy and keep the draw on the breaker low when doing experiments, and it so happens I have some chemical storage in this room and it so happens that said storage is right next to some CFLs... wonder what happened to that

I think I might switch to LEDs but likely will wait.

I have a few LED lamps. They have been continuously running for about a year now. I haven't noticed them getting any dimmer, so i would go for it. You definitely get your money's worth.

Just wait for C***ese factory production and Wal-Mart to finish taking over the LED illumination market.

How many LED traffic signal lights do you see with chunks unlit?

Not sure what my brand is, whatever homedepot usually sells...Think its n:vision, cost was pretty high. How long have you had yours? Me about 2 years, Never one one explode but my room has 8 of them that are constantly on for at least a good 10+ hours a day. My room was designed for track lighting, so it beats having 8 bulbs at 45W each...

Wonder when/if they will explode :D
