I am looking for a simple, single trace, 5mhg scope scope that 1) is known to be in good, working condition and 2) that I can pick up in the Los Angeles area. Something like a Heathkit would do, but it must be in good operating condition. I will pick it up.

is it something you can DIY? I have a spare working "flat" CRT and somewhat working driver board here if you would like a challenge
was originally from a crt door monitor but unfortunately it got damp and some of the traces corroded.
Yes I am aware that TV CRTs aren't capable of running at high frequencies but there are schematics around for PIC/AVR based 'scope to TV circuits. I've used one based on a 12F675 for single trace >50kHz use and it works well using any old B/W TV.

If you really get stuck, I have a Kikusui cos6100 that I no longer need. It is probably a bit more scope than you are looking for, 100MHz 5 channels (2 'real' channels, a channel with only 1v-0.1v/div, and 2 trigger channels) with all of the fixings like delay sweep, etc.
The down side is that it is getting old and needs some TLC. The biggest issue is that the time base has become improperly calibrated, and there are a few knobs that are getting 'dirty'.
It does work fine however, I used it for years before giving in and getting a cheap DSO.
Asking $50 for it, if you need probes I can include some decent tek probes for $25 a piece for a x1/x10 probe, or $10 for a x10 only probe.

You might try ham flea markets and look for a Heathkit 0-10 or an Eico 460 wich is a DC coupled scope. One thing--old kit class scopes have power tranformers that might not appreciate being booted back to life after 50 years and will burn out.. So make sure the the rectifier tubes are good 1V2 etc. Use a variac to reform the capacitors over several days.

There are some small oscopes available online for around $75-100. Look for pocket oscilloscopes. Or type "cheap oscilloscope" into google search. Another inexpensive approach would be a USB oscilloscope. I have seen then posted regularly on EBay.
