I built the mini sstc 5 by steve ward and the fets keep exploding
it worked fine at first by when i turn the pulse rate higher the spark gets smaller and smaller and then the fets explode and my surge protector died (short circuit) it even did that at 20V. It also killed the fets when the i used a screw as the breakout point. also sometimes if i run it for more than 5 minutes the fets explode and they are not even hot.

specs:
secondary: about 400t 30awg primary: 4turns 18awg
input power full-wave 120vac 470uf filter cap
STP25NM50N MOSFETS
the interrupter has 1uf cap not 2.2uf
the h-bridge has 0.47uf caps not 0.68uf
0.18ohm gate resistor

You should try to use circuit like this
Okmost
Shotky diodes block the mosfet parasite diode what usualy are damaged. You should use shotky at 45V and max current similar as mosfet.

i think i am going to give up on this type of sstc

does anybody know a sstc that is more simple and reliable than steve wards sstc 5 but still gives good performance (6 to 7 inches sparks)

Steve's SSTC is about as simple as it gets, your not going to do much better with anything else.

Sounds like your just pushing too much power through the FETs without proper cooling. As you increase PRF, you increase duty which increases power.

i dont think so because it killed 1300v 80A IGBTS from ST the same way

could it be i am using 0.47uf caps in the h-bridge and not 0.68uf caps

An 80A IGBT is going to blow up just as fast if you don't provide proper cooling.
